Students- Listen and Repeat the daily schedule aloud together, in a big or small voice, changing the time to a true time for you.

Find 3 People- 5-10 minutes
Blackboard-

ALT/HRT- Demonstrate together. Ask students to explain in Japanese to check comprehension.
Students- Interact in demonstration. Choose one phrase/sentence from the daily activities and make one for yourself. Then, all standing, make pairs. Winner starts, Loser uses the same phrase and a true time for him-/herself.

Alternate Final Activity-

When you do this? Do-do-DO!
ALT/HRT- Lead the chant. Afer Do-do-DO! use gestures to show one of the  daily activities. Students guess what the meaning is. Then encourage students to try and act out the daily activities.
Students- Sing along, then guess the meaning of the gestures. Then students volunteer to do gestures in front of the class.

Discussion- How many hours are there going once around the world? (24) The map on pages 44-45 show times around the world for the time given in Japan. Many countries are several hours across from east to west.  Interestingly, China, as big as it is, has only 1 time zone- everybody lives on Beijing (Peking) time!

Discussion- Ordering in a restaurant when you can't speak the language- What are your options?

  • Point to pictures in the menu. Very easy in Japan, but not all countries use pictures in the menu as much as Japan.
  • Use a phrase book- look up what you want in your own language and then point to the translated version in the foreign language.
  • As you walk into the restaurant, look carefully at what other people are eating.  Then when the waitress comes, gesture that you want what 'that guy' is having.

ALT- Give speech to students in steps:
1- After speaking the first time, ask students to tell WORDS they heard.
Write them in the spaces on the blackboard.
2- After speaking again, ask students what SENTENCES/LINES they heard. Write these in the spaces.
3- Speak again, line-by-line. Ask students for MEANING in Japanese.
4- Repeat steps 2 and 3 if needed.
5- After all words are complete on the blackboard, say speech one last time. Next- say speech one line at a time, letting HRT say their part after each line.
HRT- HRT give speech, Repeating and Changing the Pattern, one line at a time after ALT.
Students- Listen to teachers’ speeches and respond to teachers’ requests.

Let’s Listen 2- 8 minutes
Text- page 39
CD- track 48. Ken: Egypt; likes history; wants to see pyramids, Sphinx, camels in the desert. Ann: Japan; likes kimonos and sushi; wants to see Mt. Fuji. Mai: Italy; likes pizza, spaghetti, plays soccer. Ryo: Australia; likes animals, koalas and kangaroos, wants to see beautiful beaches.
ALT/HRT- Play the CD. Check the answers afterwards.
Students- Listen to the CD, write answers in text, check answers with seat partners, tell answers to teachers for checking.

ALT- Say speech in front of class. Next, again with HRT, saying one line at a time, waiting each time for HRT to say that line again, changing 1 or 2 words.  Then, do the Listen and Repeat the Pattern activity with the whole class. Students all respond in a very quiet voice.
Last, do the activity in this pattern with volunteer students.
Students- Listen, then later say own speech in a quiet voice after ALT.
Volunteer student says speech line-by-line with ALT.
HRT- Do activity with ALT and class.

Interactive Introduction- 5 minutes
Blackboard- Post a filled-in schedule poster (using the info below). And, one line for each word in the following speech-
(7 lines) On Monday, we study science and Japanese.
(7) On Tuesday, we study art and math.
(7) On Wednesday, we study homemaking and English.
(7) On Thursday, we study music and PE.
(8) On Friday, we study social studies and English.
ALT- Say the speech as written. Then ask students what words they heard- write these words into the lines on the blackboard. Lastly, ask students to translate the speech, then listen and repeat with the students.
Students- Listen to the speech and try to catch some words. Tell the teacher what words you heard. Translate the speech, then listen and repeat.

Activity Preparation- in small groups- 15 minutes
Materials- a schedule poster for each group, pens and markers.
Students- In small groups, fill in a schedule poster with subject names in ENGLISH AND JAPANESE. Using the same subject many times, and on the same day, is OK. Each student choosing all subjects for one day might be easiest.
ALT/HRT- Help students write English names onto schedule posters.

Activity- 10 minutes
ALT/HRT- Collect all of the schedule posters.
Blackboard- After the 2 or 3 groups have spoken, post thier schedule posters. Write a letter (A, B, C) next to each.
Students- 2 or 3 groups come to the front of the class, and 1 group at a time read their schedule for all the class to hear (On Monday, we study art and science.). After each of the 2 or 3 groups has read their schedule poster, post the 2 (3) schedules on the blackboard, with letters (A, B, C). All other students listen and try to guess which poster was made by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd group.
Alternate- Each of the groups in the front of the class reads only one day from their schedule, in turns (Monday, Monday, Monday; Tuesday, Tuesday, Tuesday; etc.)

Clue Bingo- 15 minutes
Materials- Dice; Clue Bingo print; cut out subject cards (20) from page 74.
Students- Place 20 subject cards onto blank Clue Bingo print. RULE- Cannot put the same subject twice on the same day. PLAY- turn over a card when it is called. Make a sentence when chosen by dice.
ALT- Intro activity. When students are ready, call out random sentences, ie., I study English on Friday. After several turns, roll dice to choose students by seat location. Chosen student makes a sentence when chosen by dice.

Students- Help guess with HRT and ALT. Later, volunteers come to the front and draw a picture on the blackboard, one line at a time.

  3. Speak again, line-by-line. Ask students for MEANING in Japanese.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 if needed.
  5. After all words are complete on the blackboard, say speech one last time.
  6. Next- say speech one line at a time, letting HRT say their part after each line.

Students- Listen to teachers’ speeches and respond to teachers’ requests.

Blackboard- Write country names in English and Japanese as students say them.

Blackboard- Draw second 12 block grid on blackboard, and You Are Here point on each map in front of train station. Also-

L) STOP!

L) Yes! (No!)

ALT/HRT- Demonstrate activity- On one grid, write 3-4 place names ramdomly on the 12 blocks. HRT asks ALT “Where’s OO?”. As ALT answers, move finger on the 2nd 12-block grid, ask 'Here?' to confirm, then write place name in that block. Do 3-4 times.
Students- While teachers are drawing on the blackboard, cut place cards from text, page 73. Watch demonstration, then do activity like the demonstration, in pairs.  Listening student place cards onto map in text, page 32-33. Next, change roles and do the activity a second time.

Full Class Checking- 5 minutes (if time)
Blackboard- 12 block grid, with Train Station at bottom.
ALT- Ask for volunteers, or choose a student with dice.  Ask: “Where’s OO?”, move a marker on blackboard to student’s directions, then write the place name there.

HRT/ALT- Listen and Repeat the dialog, then demonstrate activity. Next, ask students to explain in Japanese (to check understanding).
Students- First, ODD numbered students are SHOPKEEPERS, EVEN numbered students are SHOPPERS. Shopkeepers lay out your colored clothes cards on your desks. Shoppers go to a store and GET 1 CARD. When students 'buy' 5 cards, a full set of clothes, they sit down.
Next, odd and even number students change roles. Students keep the clothes they bought for Show and Tell in the next class.
ROUND 2- Girls shop first, then boys.

Wrap-Up-3 minutes
Discuss interchangability of verbs in the target pattern. For example, 'Do you LIKE pink?', 'Do you EAT sushi?', 'Do you WATCH Doraemon?'. Ask students to raise hands for Yes or No answers, then repeat A + 1 Answer pattern- 'Yes, I do. I watch Doraemon.'/ 'No, I don't. I don't watch Doraemon.'
